VENUE CLOSURE INFORMATION

06/11/2019 to 10/11/2019 VIEWPOINT PHOTOGRAPHY EXHIBITION

Our Viewpoint exhibition showcases images from photographers that illustrate the range of effects that can be generated by selecting an ideal vantage point. Even subtle changes in viewpoint can completely change the relationship between the objects in the photo and help to show things from a different, more unique perspective. As photographer Ansel Adams once said: ‘A good photograph is knowing where to stand’. The images featured in this exhibition have all sought to experiment with the viewpoint in order to present us with new and unexpected perspectives. VIEWPOINT is a touring photographic exhibition created and supported by The Photographic Angle. Please check website prior to attendance for latest information as dates may be subject to change. Disabled visitors are advised to check with us before visiting an exhibition so that suitable access can be provided. Open 10am to 3pm Daily - Free Public Admission.

THE WATERMILL - WEST BERKSHIRE PLAYHOUSE, NEWBURY

This celebrated nationwide project visits Newbury inviting the finest local playwrights to write and perform mini plays about their home towns. Since 2010, more than 160 writers from across the UK have returned home to pen plays about the places that shaped them. At theatres from Bristol to Belfast, Cardiff to Coventry and Nottingham to Newcastle, these plays have been performed by the playwrights themselves, coming home to tell their tale.

15/11/2019 DILLIE KEANE - SONGS OF LOVE AND OTHER BAD IDEAS
 CORN EXCHANGE, NEWBURY

After some gardening leave, Dillie is back where she belongs - on a cabaret stage, accompanied by the marvellous Michael Roulston. Her take on life and love is cheerfully sour, gently savage and peculiarly mordant - but the beautiful music softens the effect. She freely admits she has a voice like a dying crow being crushed beneath an angry sheep, but that's ever stopped her. In fact, she will be singing some perfectly wonderful songs by other songwriters which she recently discovered in New York. As well as a raft of her own songs too, of course. A delightful evening.

16/11/2019 to 05/01/2020 APRÈS - READING'S MOST POPULAR CHRISTMAS BAR

For the fifth year the outdoor ski lodge bar will be back in Reading over the festive period. Gunter, head ski instructor/chief cocktail tester, and his team will be serving Mulled Wine, Frosty pints of Beer and their signature Winter Cocktails. Two years ago the bar moved to Station Hill, however that site is currently being redeveloped, and is unavailable in 2019, so the bar has moved back to its original home beside the ice rink in Forbury Gardens. A huge attraction to the Après Bar is their cosy mini chalets. Each one seats up to 10 people and is decorated with festive décor and blankets - and this year there’s a larger chalet as well, along with a marquee area with heaters. It’s a great spot to stop by for a swift drink during the festive period and it is also perfect for Christmas Parties. From reserving a small seated area or a chalet for a group, to hiring a section of the venue for your entire company.

16/11/2019 to 20/11/2019 THE FOUR ELEMENTS - PHOTOGRAPHY EXHIBITION

This theme offers fresh insights into one or more of the four elements, earth, air, fire and water. The Elizabethans believed that all matter was composed of just these 4 elements. Whilst understanding has progressed since then with the discovery of the periodic table, they were long-held beliefs, going back to ancient civilisations.Fast forward a few thousand years and this exhibition offers the opportunity to explore, visually, the multi-faceted nature and power of the 4 elements. The universality of this theme reflects the worldwide distribution of our photographers and the range of locations which have provided inspiration for these striking images.THE 4 ELEMENTS is a touring photographic exhibition created and supported by The Photographic Angle. Open 10am – 3pm daily, free public admission.

Business to Business :
27/11/2019 LECTURE: DOING BUSINESS BETTER - SHOULD READING FIRMS HAVE A SOCIAL PURPOSE
 UNIVERSITY OF READING

Business delivers society’s wants and needs: from goods and services, to wealth creation and employment. But businesses also enjoy a range of benefits from society: access to an educated workforce; reliable transport links; and the protections of the legal system. This lecture will explore the nature of this complex relationship between business and society from the perspective of what is called ‘social contract theory’ in philosophy.Using evidence from her own research, Professor Emma Borg will ask what a ‘social purpose’ is, and whether companies should specify and fulfil such a purpose to earn their place in society. She will explain how ethical business behaviour can result in happier, healthier and more productive employees, greater loyalty from customers and suppliers and ultimately boost a company’s bottom line.Emma Borg is a Professor of Philosophy and leads the University of Reading’s Centre for Cognition Research. She specialises in the philosophy of language and the mind, and the study of the relationship between business and society.Admission free. Booking advisable.

27/11/2019 to 30/11/2019 THE HAPPIEST DAYS OF YOUR LIFE

It is 1947, and many boarding schools who were evacuated during the war are returning to their premises. Hilary Hall (boys) are back in their old school buildings after five years and are just settling in when they receive the news that they will have to share their premises with a school of similar size and type. Unfortunately, ‘The Ministry’ has got its blue and pink cards mixed up and St Swithins (girls) arrive en masse. Confusion and chaos reign among teachers and pupils alike – and Rainbow the caretaker is none too pleased either!

05/12/2019 to 08/12/2019 THE ALDERMASTON YORK NATIVITY PLAY

The village of Aldermaston has put on a Nativity Play in the parish church of St Mary the Virgin every year since 1957. The play is an adaptation of 8 or 9 plays from the 400 year old York Mystery Cycle plays that tell the story of the first Christmas. The Aldermaston staging of the York Nativity Play was the brainchild of Revd Canon Stanley Young, the vicar of Aldermaston, and Pat Eastop, a local mother and teacher who had studied Medieval Art. Pat went on to direct the play for 57 consecutive years before her death in 2014. She was awarded an M.B.E. This version of The York Nativity Play Cycle was made in 1930 by E. Martin Browne. The text was revised in 1952, after E. Martin Brown’s experience in producing the York Mystery Cycle Plays. It is this 1952 edition that we perform at Aldermaston. Martin Browne had a long career in religious drama He produced the revival of the Mystery Plays in York in 1951, 1954 and 1957.

08/12/2019 LIVE MUSIC - PICTISH TRAIL
 SOUTH STREET ARTS CENTRE, READING

Throughout his career Pictish Trail – aka Johnny Lynch – has resolutely furrowed his own path, steadily creating a unique catalogue of recordings and performances through his own labels (Lost Map / Fence Records) while eschewing the blueprint of the predictable singer-songwriter in favour of something untidily intriguing. Born out of a compulsion to make infectious, melody driven music from a treasure trove of secret sounds, Pictish Trail’s spectral songs are filtered through a sun-warped pop lens, where heart-pumping guitar shriek-outs collide with sampled gurgles and fractured lyrics figure-skate over sine-waves of glacial synth.
