05/03/2019 to 20/04/2019 ART EXHIBITION - LIFE ON A SPECTRUM
 ARLINGTON ARTS, NEWBURY

Abstract art exhibition ‘Life on a Spectrum’ explores autism through the eyes of an autistic artist through the visual form of mixed media on paper. The show at Arlington Arts brings together two collections to form Amatina’s newest exhibit ‘Life on a Spectrum’. The first is ‘Autismo 25’, which uses the Spanish word for autism; ‘autismo’ as it was created while taking part in Hannacc artist residency in Spain - but also acts as a reminder that autism is a global condition and something that affects people regardless of where we are in the world. While ‘NYC 14’ is Amatina’s latest work undertaken in New York City as a result of obtaining the Arts Council England ‘Developing your Creative Practice’ funding. My vision is colour. My heartbeat is rhyme. My mind expands with bursts of line, shape, and form. Art imbues each moment of our lives, every cell of our beings. My hands tell my stories as I connect with humanity and explore meaning through creativity and art. The voyage continues...

01/04/2019 to 14/07/2019 AN EARTHLY PARADISE - WILLIAM MORRIS AND THE THAMES

This new exhibition illustrates the rich and little-known story of William Morris’ deep connections to the Thames. We bring together a unique selection of works, with loans from the V&A, The William Morris Gallery, British Library, and many more. Highlights include Morris’ Thames series of textiles alongside his original hand-drawn designs, a signed copy of News from Nowhere, and his personal fishing tackle and spectacles. Materials from the Morris & Co. workshop illustrate the production process, while socialist pamphlets that Morris penned and published demonstrate his deep commitment to socialism in later life. The influence of the Thames and its tributaries flowed through William Morris’ life and work. The river provided the setting for his leisure time spent angling and boating, inspiration for his designs and writing, and the ideal water conditions for the manufacture of his textiles. One notable Thames boat trip from his London home via Henley to his rural retreat in Oxfordshire was so moving that it inspired his socialist utopia novel, News from Nowhere.

South Hill Park’s popular Easter production is back, and dancing on the tables, with Disney’s smash-hit show High School Musical, produced by the same creative team which brought you the sell-out smash hit Madagascar – A Musical Adventure and Seussical. Disney’s 2006 blockbuster movie-musical comes to life on the Wilde Theatre stage this Easter as Troy, Gabriella and the students of East High must deal with issues of first love, friends and family whilst balancing their classes and spontaneously bursting into song. It’s the first day back at East High after winter break. Basketball team captain Troy discovers that Gabriella, a girl he met when singing karaoke on a skiing trip, has just enrolled at school. They both cause upheaval after deciding to audition for the high school musical – posing a threat to the status quo but opening the door for others to shine as well. Disney’s High School Musical, with its epic dance numbers and upbeat tunes, including We’re All in This Together, Breaking Free and Bop to the Top, is the ideal Easter treat for the whole family.

17/04/2019 to 18/04/2019 THE TRIALS OF OSCAR WILDE
 ANVIL ARTS, BASINGSTOKE

Following a sell-out West End run, European Arts Company brings this brilliant dramatisation of the libel and criminal trials of Oscar Wilde, written by his grandson Merlin Holland. Thursday 14 February 1895 was the triumphant opening night of The Importance of Being Earnest and the zenith of Wilde's career. Less than 100 days later, he found himself a common prisoner sentenced to two years' hard labour. So what happened during the trials and what did Wilde say? Was he persecuted or the author of his own downfall? By using the actual words spoken in court, we can feel what it was like to be in the company of a flawed genius - as this less than ideal husband is suddenly reduced to a man of no importance.

20/04/2019 ROYALS v BRIGHTON - WOMEN'S SUPER LEAGUE

Reading FC Women return to Madejski Stadium this weekend to host Brighton & Hove Albion – and the kick-off time has been brought forward to 1pm on Saturday 20th April. The Royals’ return to RG2 had initially been scheduled for 2pm, but please be aware that kick-off time is now an hour earlier for our Easter fixture. After the heartbreak of an FA Cup exit last weekend, Reading return to league action when they visit bottom side Yeovil on Wednesday, before heading back to Berkshire to host the Seagulls at the weekend. It is the second time this season that the Royals Women will have played at Madejski Stadium; the first ended in a disappointing 2-1 defeat to West Ham United, so they’ll be aiming to get back to winning ways. The Royals sit in sixth position in English football’s top tier at the moment, four points behind Bristol City, but they have two games in hand over the Vixens as the season nears it conclusion.

21/04/2019 SUNDAY ASSEMBLY READING - 'COCOA'

I don’t know about you, but for me as a kid, Easter was about Easter Eggs. It was breaking the thick chocolate shell and hoping there was a gift inside. As a parent, Easter was hiding mini chocolate eggs, each of us taking turns to be the hider and shouting ‘hotter-colder’ to the searchers as they frantically scoured the garden for glints of silver wrapping in the bushes and trees. This month we welcome Fiona Lahive from Cocoa Research UK at Reading University, who will talk about the humble bean that has had such a profound impact on our culture. As always there will be silly games, sharing, socialising, and singing along with The Word of Bob: Sweet Child Of Mine, Sweet Dreams, How Sweet It Is To Be Loved By You and Sweet Caroline. After the Assembly, we will either go for a picnic or to Brewdog depending on the weather.

24/04/2019 DAVID THOMAS BROUGHTON + WILD ISLAND
 SOUTH STREET ARTS CENTRE, READING

Since emerging from the ever-fertile West Yorkshire DIY scene in the mid-00s, David Thomas Broughton has forged a distinctly unique path of incongruous musical exploration. Employing minimal performance tools, Broughton wilfully embraces elements of chaos, error, and malfunction, building them into his folk-ish narrative tales until one part destroys the other. Ever on twin precipices dividing tragedy from comedy and beauty from ruin, his semi-improvised, self-deprecating, lovelorn songs reward a patient audience with moments of delicate charm, all the time wondering whether he is truly in control of the situation. And yet, he always is.

The play emerges from interviews with town residents born 1925-45; an era when children should be seen-and-not-heard, and it often felt dangerous to speak out politically. Now in their 70s-90s, are the Silent Generation heard today? With low social integration and little representation across television and social-media platforms, it doesn’t feel like it. Strike Up invite all generations of the audience to participate in a post-show debate - see you there.

November 2018 saw the release of the third album by award-winning and acclaimed folk group The Furrow Collective. Their new album 'Fathoms' was produced in Powys and Oxfordshire by honorary fifth-Furrow Andy Bell and sees the group build further on their substantial reputation for breathing new life into traditional songs. The twelve recordings of which Fathoms is comprised capture typically innovative arrangements and set the four distinctive voices in a magical, captivating sound-world.
