20/09/2018 to 27/10/2018 TRIAL BY LAUGHTER - AT THE WATERMILL THEATRE
THE WATERMILL - WEST BERKSHIRE PLAYHOUSE, NEWBURY

Following critical acclaim for The Wipers Times, Ian Hislop and Nick Newman return to The Watermill with the premiere of a new play inspired by extraordinary real-life events. William Hone, the forgotten hero of free speech, was a bookseller, publisher and satirist. In 1817, he stood trial for ‘impious blasphemy and seditious libel’. The only crime he had committed was to be funny. Worse than that he was funny by parodying religious texts. And worst of all, he was funny about the despotic government and the debauched monarchy. Along with his great ally, political cartoonist George Cruikshank, Hone sought vindication for his laughable offences and fought for freedom in one of the most remarkable legal cases of its time.

12/10/2018 TRIBUTE TO THE GOON SHOW
 THE HEXAGON THEATRE, READING

From the producers of the critically acclaimed 50th Anniversary Tour of Round the Horne comes another radio comedy classic live on stage. In 1951 the landscape of British comedy changed dramatically when The Goon Show burst onto the airwaves of the BBC Home Service. Spike Milligan, Peter Sellers, Harry Secombe and co. brought a brand of surreal chaotic humour, unlike anything that had been heard before and revolutionised the way radio comedy was produced. With its bizarre characters, fantastical plots and hilarious running jokes, The Goon Show captured the imagination of the British public and made household names of its three main stars, all of whom would go on to achieve fame across the globe. The show’s influence is still felt today with comedians like Eddie Izzard citing the show as a major influence.

15/10/2018 LEGENDARY FOLK ROCKERS STEELEYE SPAN - WITH PENTANGLES JACQUI McSHEE
 THE HEXAGON THEATRE, READING

Steeleye Span (led as ever by the iconic vocals of Maddy Prior and featuring their new seven-piece line up) play a special show in the company of one of their musical contemporaries - Pentangle's Jacqui McShee, a legend of folk and jazz music and a true innovator in both genres across a long career. Steeleye Span are fast approaching their 50th anniversary 2019, with a work rate to put many younger artists to shame. The bands’ eighth album in twelve years - 2016's Dodgy Bastards - saw them return to the folk tales and characters that have always been at the heart of the Steeleye sound. Dodgy Bastards saw the folk-rock pioneers continue drawing stories of murder, religion, incest, skulls, honour killings and tormented spirit. They once more create an inspired and dark take on the music of the British Isles. Steeleye Span are an English Folk Rock band formed in 1969. Still active today, along with Fairport Convention they are amongst the best known acts of the British Folk Revival and are among the most commercially successful.

20/10/2018 AFRICAN NIGHT FEVER - DIABEL CISSOKHO
 SOUTH STREET ARTS CENTRE, READING

Senegalese musician Diabel Cissokho is part of a great line of Cissokho griots. Growing up in Dakar and Tambacounda, surrounded by a rich musical heritage and a family of musicians, Diabel started playing a number of traditional instruments at a very tender age under the watchful eyes of his family. However, Diabel’s affinity with the kora was clear from the start. Diabel is among a new generation of modernisers, taking the ancient African Harp into the 21st Century and bringing audiences an electrifying blend of AfroManding fusion with tantalizing traditional West African rhythms, that stem from the roots of his vibrant Senegalese culture.

23/10/2018 MAIDENHEAD UNITED v CHIPPENHAM TOWN - FA CUP 4th QUALIFYING ROUND REPLAY

Maidenhead United are second only to Reading in Berkshire football, playing in the National League, one step below the Football League. Their second season in the competition has been a little up and down, but now they have a great chance to bring a glamour fixture to York Road. If they beat Chippenham in tonight's FA Cup fourth qualifying round reply, then they would have a plum home clash with League 1 Portsmouth to look forward to. The Magpies and Chippenham drew 1-1 in Wiltshire on Saturday, the home side equalising with the last kick of the game. It's a blow Maidenhead will aim to recover from - and land that date with Pompey!

We have surely all been sidetracked in our research when looking through the local newspaper. However, newspapers frequently enable us to put the flesh on the bones and bring our ancestors alive. There is so much information from trade advertisements, court cases, potted histories associated with marriages or obituaries that they are a valuable resource. This talk looks at how to access them in the digital age and examines their usefulness.

03/11/2018 READING BACH CHOIR - WE WHO ARE LEFT

This concert commemorates the 1918 armistice with works by five English composers reflecting their own musical backgrounds and wartime experiences. The wellspring of Gerald Finzi’s Requiem da Camera was the death in action in 1918 of his first composition teacher, Ernest Farrar, whom he idolised. Finzi was shattered, and in the wake of Farrar’s passing conceived this memorial to him at the beginning of the 1920s. Gustav Holst’s Ode to Death (1922), for chorus and orchestra, was also written in response to composer friends who died in the war. Its quiet resigned mood and feeling of the infinite make it for many people Holst’s most beautiful choral work. His daughter Imogen Holst’s Three Psalms (1943), for chorus and strings, are stunning pieces with subtle rhythms and carefully hidden harmonies producing a variety of choral textures. George Dyson fought in the war, suffering shell-shock, but his Hierusalem (1956), for soprano, chorus and strings, presents not the grief and horror of war but a vision of heaven.

A razor-sharp commentary on the morals and conventions of English society, Easy Virtue displays Noël Coward’s satire and wit in a rare revival of one of his earliest plays. The Young Company recreate the glamour and scandal of the Roaring Twenties in this comic melodrama, full of rumours, misapprehensions and dazzling jewels.

07/11/2018 to 11/11/2018 PHOTOGRAPHIC EXHIBITION - CREATIVITY

CREATIVITY is a touring photographic exhibition, created and supported by The Photographic Angle.Historically we were always trying to capture the fleeting image, one that reflected reality as we saw it. By contrast, in a world of iPhones and Instagram we now often see images that present an altered sense of reality. Although photography is a creative art form in itself, the concept of this theme showcases the results achieved when camera settings, editing techniques and creative angles are used to the photographers advantage. All art is subjective and we fully expect visitors to be challenged by the work on display. Some images may be considered beautiful, while others are thought-provoking; some may even challenge your perception on what constitutes a photographic image. Free Public Admission.

08/11/2018 to 12/11/2018 PATTERNS PHOTOGRAPHY EXHIBITION

PATTERNS. They surround us. We come across them every day and yet we very rarely take that much notice of them. Exploring the hidden geometry that surrounds us, enables us to truly appreciate the way that pattern can help us to tell a story. Focusing on different forms, structures, textures and colours is a great starting point for exploring pattern and discovering the narrative that begins to unravel. The photographers who have work featured in this exhibition have taken nature, architecture, art, design and more as their inspiration. They have experimented with repetition, tessellation, symmetry, perspective, angles and magnification to create powerful images using visual patterns. PATTERNS is a touring photographic exhibition, created and supported by ThePhotographic Angle. Please check website prior to attendance for latest information as dates may be subject to change. 10am to 3pm - free entry.

10/11/2018 PAUL FOOT - IMAGE CONSCIOUS
 SOUTH STREET ARTS CENTRE, READING

Greetings. I am one of the world’s comedians and I’m here to tell ye about my show. Have you ever considered the unique predicament of the soft-shell crab? Well I have. That animal is absolutely ridiculous. What about the many, MANY problems that occur when organising a suburban orgy? The catering, for example. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg, which incidentally is a terrible type of lettuce.
