29/05/2018 to 12/01/2019 PATRONS AND DONORS - READING'S ART AND HOW IT GOT HERE

In 1885 crowd-sourcing existed in Reading: 5000 people contributed to the cost of having a portrait of biscuit magnate William Isaac Palmer painted for the town. And remarkably in the 1970s Reading commissioned a modern set of Civic silver with the support of dozens of local businesses. When Palmer went on to bequeath his personal collection of contemporary Victorian art, he started the impressive art collection at Reading Museum and set a precedent for later generations of gifts from Reading people. Today the museum remains unusual as its art collection continues to grow through the support of Reading Foundation for Art, grant-giving bodies and many individuals. See familiar favourites and unexpected treasures, some with curious stories attached.

This intriguing 'whodunnit' twists and turns towards an edge-of-your-seat climax, leaving you guessing right until the last chilling moment! What's more, she admits to murder. Then, surprisingly, the unexpected guest offers to help her concoct an alibi. But is it possible that Laura Warwick did not commit the murder after all? If so, who is she shielding? The house seems full of possible suspects...

The new estate want the maverick local boy evicted, but Johnny has other plans. At his ramshackle caravan kingdom, the charismatic hellraiser entertains his band of ‘undesirable’ scallywags with outlandish tales, unbelievable antics and an ample supply of booze and drugs. Infamous for holding the most riotous parties this side of the Wiltshire border, Johnny is a hero to many but a villain to others. Pursued by the authorities, threatened by the local thug and reprimanded by his ex, Johnny is not a man to be beaten down.

A wide variety of printmaking techniques, both traditional and more contemporary, have been used in these HANDMADE ORIGINAL PRINTS by artist-printmakers belonging to PRINT AT THE PARK. The works are as varied as the interests of the artists themselves, both in style and subject matter, ranging from urban and rural landscapes, the human figure and other living creatures, plant life and more abstract compositions. Many have distinctly 'summery' qualities. There are over 40 works. Prices range from £45 to £150, remarkably low for work of such quality. The more that are sold; the more widespread the benefits: as 25% of all sale proceeds are contributed to the hospital's Voluntary Services.

11/07/2018 to 21/07/2018 READING OPEN AIR SHAKESPEARE - MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING
 PROGRESS THEATRE, READING

Enjoy an open-air production.of this great Shakespearean comedy - although with a touch of darkness. Much Ado About Nothing follows the return of soldiers from war. Packed with intrigue, double-crossing and plenty of laughter, Much Ado About Nothing is the perfect introduction to Shakespeare. Following the turbulent romances between Hero and Claudio and Beatrice and Benedict, this exploration of what loyalty, chivalry, and true love really mean empowers us to challenge our perceptions of relationships. Our production moves the story from Italy to an English house at the conclusion of World War Two. It will be using the story of the lovers to explore the nature of the relationship between men and women as well as exploring themes of jealousy and class. Leonato welcomes his friends back from war. His daughter, Hero, is in love with Claudio. His niece, Beatrice, verbally spars with Benedict. Can their friends conspire to bring them together? Will ill-intentioned Don John succeed in driving Claudio and Hero apart? Can Leonatos's sister, Antonia, come up with a plan to save the day? Can the watchmen overcome their incompetence to bring out the truth?

12/07/2018 NO KIDS
 CORN EXCHANGE, NEWBURY

To procreate or not to procreate; that is the question. No Kids explores the personal journey that real-life couple Nir and George embarked upon when they asked the question: as a gay couple, should we go out of our way to have children? Gender-bending musical cabaret and verbatim theatre marry to conceive a distinctly queer piece that asks: should we be making more babies in an increasingly overpopulated world? And is our society truly open to the idea of two dads?

As they look through the view screens on their phones they can see children in school uniforms, dancing girls, soldiers, nurses and more! Over days of filming they realise the children and adults they are seeing are about to fall victim to a disaster, when dozens of people will be killed in a dreadful accident on the platform. Emma Jane Kennedy is an excellent singer songwriter who performs across the South East and is accompanied by Steve Sculpher on bass. Inspired by the landscapes that have duly shaped his music, Adam’s lyrics often bring to life the stories of the places and people he’s met along the way. Like Orpheus in the Underworld, this rarely performed operetta is an irreverent and hilarious take on Greek mythology and the scurrilous goings-on that led to the Trojan wars.  CORN EXCHANGE, NEWBURY

Inspired by the short stories of Anais Nin, this devised show presents modern fables of love, loss and urban decay. On the night bus, on the last train, amongst the detritus of deserted pubs and clubs and in the secret corners of the city, pickpocket poets steal the stories of the lost. Started over thirty two years ago, by Founding Director and continuing Producer Robin Strapp, Newbury Youth Theatre has always operated on the principle that high quality theatre can be made collaboratively with young people. They aim to harness the creativity of the workshop experience, developing ideas using a variety of styles and techniques.

Music Across the 20th Century - a programme of lighter choral music suited to a summer's evening. The 20th Century has witnessed amazing changes in popular music. The Reading Haydn Choir's concert will give a flavour of these changes from Britten's ethereal Hymn to St Cecilia to the Beatles' lighthearted When I'm Sixty-Four, via glorious jazz pieces and the exciting and vibrant music from Leonard Bernstein's West Side Story. All this topped off with a few lollipops from accomplished cellist, Cecilia Bignall, who has already performed in concert with the choir. Come along and let your hair down - it'll be a fun evening!

01/08/2018 to 05/08/2018 MY COUNTRY PHOTOGRAPHY EXHIBITION

Our My Country exhibition illustrates how photographers across the world view their own country. For many it was an opportunity to present their country in a positive light; they have shared their favourite landscapes, local wildlife or bustling street scenes. Amongst the images, there are some political and social messages for us, from Britain and around the world. Collectively, they encourage us to consider how each of us might improve life for everyone in our own country. MY COUNTRY is a touring photographic exhibition created and supported by The Photographic Angle.
